So yesterday I went to probably one of the weirdest, greatest music festivals ever invented. St. Jerome's Laneway Festival.
Yes it indeed was in a laneway.
Dave and I got the train there and didn't know what to expect at all considering this was the first ever to be held in Sydney. After finally finding out how to get there we found it and went in a realised how odd the whole idea is. It was set up seriously in the middle of the city right next to the Mariott Hotel and the stages were tiny with one in the middle of the park and another down the actual laneway. The fact that we saw the lead singer from The Gossip waiting in line for a beer pretty much set up the vibe of the whole day. Noone gave a shit about anything.
With Big Day Out now, you get the bogans. All of the Aussies who aren't there for the sheer joy of hearing a good band play, but just another place and reason to get pissed with their mates. Hateful. However at Jerome's, there was none of them. The crowd was clearly a Triple J loving crowd with majority of girls wearing nanna dresses and majority of boys wearing tight pants or oversized sunglasses. It was good though because there was no annomosity between anyone, which is rare these days at any music event.
So anyway, stand-out bands for me were The Gossip (the singer was hilarious. She has an INSANE voice and sounds almost like a R'n'B, Mary J. Blige but with indie rock fushion behind her), Broken Social Scene (In total the band usually has 18 members I think, there was only 8 at the festival but they were still awesome. They have a Flaming Lips vibe kinda going on and they blew me away), Wolf & Cub (Love this band after seeing them with Hot Hot Heat. Two drummers... What more to say!?), and an unexpectedly good band, The Hold Steady (Didn't know anything about them before the concert and stumbled across their old-school, punk sound and loved it much.)
Overall it was an awesome day only brought down by insane prices of everything, massive toilet waiting lines and wicked cramps on my behalf.
Next year, everyone is going no matter what the line-up is like.
